A bright Stone Spring Storage hallway with rolling doors lifted open

Blog — Packing a storage unit: what the pros know.

The five rules

  1. Heavy on the bottom. Books, dishes, tools — they go in first.
  2. Breakables on top. Glass, lamps, framed art.
  3. Mattress against the long wall, on its side. Saves a ton of floor space.
  4. Leave a center aisle. Or you'll have to unpack to find anything.
  5. Label every box on two sides. One side ends up against a wall, guaranteed.

A note on box quality

Free grocery store boxes are tempting and sometimes terrible — they're often weak, oddly sized, and harbor pantry moths. We sell proper moving boxes at the office that all stack the same way.
