Five things to do before the first freeze

1. Check your seal. Climate-controlled units like ours handle most of this for you, but make sure nothing's blocking the door from sealing.
2. Lift items off the floor. Pallets or shelving — even half an inch helps.
3. Avoid plastic bags directly on upholstery. Trapped moisture is the enemy. Use breathable covers.
4. Drain anything that can freeze. Garden hoses, water tanks, that one bottle of soda you forgot.
5. Park anything you'll need in front. Snow shovels, ice melt, cold-weather gear shouldn't be behind 30 boxes.
